We took a little "field trip" to Oklahoma City this weekend to celebrate Memorial Day...
This is the Murrah Building Memorial from the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. I've heard so much about this memorial, but have never taken the opportunity to visit. We are so glad we did!
The bombing occurred at 9:02 am. There are "gates" on either side of the memorial that depict the innocence of the city at 9:01 am and the resolve to survive and be better from this tradgedy at 9:03. It is very moving.
This is spray painted by one of the rescue teams on the side of the adjacent building.
The field of empty chairs... notice the little chairs. There were 168 people killed, 19 of which were children. The saddest part of the memorial for me was seeing the little chairs.
Memorial wall... Hunter is taking pics at the moment-
Loved these angel wings he caught...
This is an area at the memorial for children to sign. There are big huge "chalkboards" on the ground and our kids left their messages. It was HOT HOT HOT!
Tiles sent by a school to show they were lending a "hand."
The survivor tree. This tree survived the blast and gives hope to all those who survived.
The ranger told our kids to dip their hands in the reflecting pool and then place them on the walls of the gates. They could leave their handprints there forever...
Barrett went the extra mile and left 6 handprints!
Even dad left his helping hands.
After spending about an hour and a half-- we were hot and tired, but so grateful to be Americans!
So glad we were able to see this memorial. What a way to kick off a great Memorial Day weekend.
